Did You Know?

Portobelo, a town on Panama’s north coast, was named by Christopher Columbus in 1502.

Description

Eleta’s photographs relate the stories of people of a wide variety of social classes and backgrounds throughout Latin America. The Portobelo series addresses the lives of a small group of inhabitants of a now sleepy small town that was once the busiest Spanish port in the New World. The artist moved to Portobelo in the 1970s and discovered that it had retained many traditional cultural practices and religious beliefs of the late 1500s.
