This occupational portrait shows the subject amid the objects with which he makes his living.Description
Alfredo Vargas Escalante was a textile worker until the factory went bankrupt. He utilized his severance package and modest savings to purchase this small key duplicating stand. The artist wanted workers like Escalante, who serve the tourists and wealthy Lima residents of the upscale Miraflores area, to be seen as individuals, so he handwrote their life stories around their portraits.- 1991Roberto Huarcaya (the artist)Schneider Gallery, Chicago, ILJune 3, 2019the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH
