Did You Know?

In the biblical story, Judith saved her people by seducing and beheading the Assyrian general Holofernes.

Description

The title of the photograph, which is based on Artemisia Gentileschi’s painting of Judith Slaying Holofernes, c. 1614-20, suggests a different slant than the biblical version. Viewing the violent act before us, it is not hard to imagine Judith, traditionally seen as a heroine, as the fanatic, “a person exhibiting excessive enthusiasm and intense uncritical devotion toward some controversial matter (as in religion or politics).”
