Based on a Russian poem that was inspired by Georgian legends and history, Thamar is the story of a queen who seduces a traveling prince, then stabs him through the heart. Adolph Bolm (1884–1951), who played the prince, injured his spinal cord in 1917 while dancing this ballet in the United States with the Ballets Russes.
