This Dutch American wardrobe was likely made in a community along the Hudson River in New York by a cabinetmaker who had originally come from the region in or around Amsterdam in Holland.Description
The earliest furniture made in America often shared similarities with works made in the country from where the settlers originated. With its bun feet, paneled surface, and broad projecting cornice, this wardrobe (kast) resembles earlier Dutch examples that come from Amsterdam and its surrounding areas. Therefore, this wardrobe was likely made by the Dutch settlers who colonized New York and New Jersey.- Cornelius Elmendorf [b. 1697], Kingston, NY?-1844Martin Elmendorf [1769-1844], Saugerties, NY?-1866Reverend Anthony Elmendorf [1813-1866], New York City, NY, by descent to his son, Henry Livingston Elmendorf1866-1906Henry Livingston Elmendorf [1852-1906], Buffalo, NY, by descent to his son, Dr. William Ten Eyck Elmendorf1906-1962William Ten Eyck Elmendorf [1880-1962], New York, NY, by decent to Katharine Elmendorf YoungKatharine Elmendorf Young [1912-1999], by descent to her daughter, Katharine DancoKatharine Danco [1929-2018], Cleveland, OH, by descent to Suzanne Elmendorf Danco Doggett-2019Suzanne Elmendorf Danco Doggett & Walter Ten Eyck Danco, Cleveland, OH, given to the Cleveland Museum of Art2019-The Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH
