Did You Know?
The woman in this painting is likely Bonnard’s wife, Marthe de Méligny, who is putting on black stockings as her toffee-colored hair frame her face in several of the artist’s works.Description
Known for his bold use of color, Bonnard sets his model against a rich gold background, her figure defined with hints of green and blue that separate her limbs from the sea of fabric. A sense of movement is created through the waves of tousled hair and organic form of the serpent-like stocking waiting to be put on.- by 1966(Collection Galerie Paul Petrides, Paris, France)after 1966–before 1991Private Collection, New York, NYafter 1966–before 1991(JPL Fine Arts, London, United Kingdom)by 1991–possibly 1996Private Collection, Great Britainby 1996–before 2008Possibly Neffe-Degrande, London, United Kingdom2008–2020Nancy F. and Joseph P.
