Did You Know?

This video includes a performance by the American cellist Charlotte Moorman playing Nam June Paik's TV Cello (1971).

Description

This upbeat, experimental video opens with a couple dancing to Mitch Ryder’s “Devil with a Blue Dress On,” interspersed with scenes of a traditional Korean fan dance. While the abrupt switching between scenes and music creates an evocative “collage” of moving imagery, the fast, energetic pace creates a vision of a futuristic media landscape. Paik once described his works that manipulate TV monitors and distort their images—new materials and approaches at that time—“I use technology in order to hate it properly.”
