Did You Know?

Self-portraits in mirrors are a theme that runs through Ilse Bing’s art.

Description

Ilse Bing was commissioned to photograph the collection of life-sized wax figures at the celebrated Parisian nightclub Le Moulin Rouge. She ended up photographing its patrons and performers for her own art. This image captures both what was in front of and what was behind Bing’s camera. The left third shows what was before her. The right two-thirds present a mirrored wall reflecting the patrons behind her and the artist herself, seen as she shoots this photograph.
