Did You Know?

Water lilies that cover too much of a pond’s surface can cause algae blooms and stagnant water, which is a prime breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Description

The young girl here, Maddie, is swimming in the pond on her family’s land in rural North Carolina. Lucas Foglia writes that Maddie’s parents live off the grid. They built their home from trees on the property and grow or gather most of their food. Maddie’s father, Nathan, runs a wilderness camp to help children connect with the natural world.
