Did You Know?

In the winter, fog lasting for days or even weeks is not uncommon in Budapest, which is bisected by the Danube River.

Description

The empty, hazy streets in this photograph suggest that Budapest was in the middle of one of those periods of fog. Modernist photographers advocated for sharp focus, considering it a defining characteristic of the medium. André Kertész, who always followed his own path, here glories in the way solid objects are dematerialized by the haze, which renders the bicyclist and the horse-drawn carriage mostly as silhouettes.
