This drawing was once owned by collectors Leo and Gertrude Stein, in whose Parisian apartment it would have been seen by a young Pablo Picasso.Description
Paul Cezanne is known for moving beyond the visible brushwork of Impressionism toward a “constructive stroke,” in which each mark built a cohesive whole. He favored subjects that he saw as timeless, including landscape, the focus of this watercolor. Cezanne depicted chestnut trees at the Jas de Bouffan, his family estate outside Aix-en-Provence in southern France. He used graphite lines and areas of muted watercolor, but also the whiteness of his sheet of paper to represent the scene. The artist worked in watercolor throughout his entire career, seeing it as a site of experimentation and for developing new ideas.- probably 1895 - ?(Ambroise Vollard [1867–1939], Paris, presumably sold to Princess Murat, Paris)after 1906 - probably 1913Princess Murat [1878–1936], Paris1913 - 1914Leo [1872–1947] and Gertrude [1874–1946] Stein, Paris, owned jointly1914 - ?Gertrude Stein, Paris1926 - 1929(Bernheim-Jeune, Paris)1929(Paul Cassirer, Berlin, sold to Hertha Harries-von Siemens, Berlin)1929 - 1939Hertha Harries-von Siemens [1870–1939], Berlin, by descent1939 - 2004private collection, Munichprobably 2004(Walter Feilchenfeldt, Zurich)2004 - 2021private collection, Switzerland2021(Luxembourg & Co., London, sold to the Cleveland Museum of Art)2021-Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH
