Did You Know?

Bethnal Green was among the most overcrowded and impoverished areas of London.

Description

Bill Brandt, born in Germany to a British father and German mother, arrived in London in 1933 and was fascinated by the stratification of British society. He set out to document all levels of people, from the wealthy and their servants to impoverished industrial workers. This young housewife, living in one of the rows of tiny Victorian workers’ townhouses in Bethnal Green, may be poor but works hard to keep her home neat and clean.
