Did You Know?

James Barnor was the first international press photographer in Ghana.

Description

Barnor, who has lived and worked in Ghana and London, recorded both the development of a postcolonial identity in his native Ghana and the growth of multiculturalism in London. He introduced color processing to Ghana in the 1970s and uses color to evoke time, place, and mood. In this scene of modern life in Ghana in 1974, the muted palette suggests the passage of time and the dusty corner on which the young woman stands.
