Did You Know?
At his home in Giverny, France, Claude Monet created a Japanese-inspired water garden beginning in the 1890s.Description
When photographing that garden in 1989, Cleveland artist Herbert Ascherman chose an elongated, vertical panoramic format. It evokes the Japanese scroll paintings that influenced the Impressionist painters, including Monet. To view other depictions of the garden at Giverny in the museum’s collection see Monet’s painting Water Lilies (Agapanthus), c. 1915–26 (1960.81) and photographs by Sally Gall (1993.216) and Lynn Geesaman (2000.90).- 1989-2022Herbert Ascherman, Jr. [1947-] (the artist), Beachwood, OH, given to The Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OHSeptember 12, 2022-The Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH
