Description

Doris Hall was born in Lakewood, Ohio, and studied printmaking at the Cleveland Institute of Art. In the 1940s she began experimenting with enamel sculptures. She frequently collaborated with her husband, the artist Kalman Kubinyi, on the design and construction of her pieces. Kubinyi typically hammered out the metal forms, in this case a copper cat, and Hall decorated them with intricate designs, firing the forms in her home kiln. A talented colorist, Hall was intrigued by the medium’s varied palette and its ability to create visual depth through layers of opaque and transparent enamels.
