Did You Know?

In the 1500s, the Wichita engaged in extensive trade with the Pueblo villages of New Mexico and the Caddo settlements in northeast Texas.

Description

Edward S. Curtis wrote that “the Wichita belong to the Caddoan linguistic family and in the earliest historical times lived in the Arkansas valley in the present Kansas. Here they were visited by Coronado and his force of Spaniards in 1541.” Archaeologists trace the Wichita back to the Plains Village cultures, which began around 1,200 years ago and at one point inhabited most of present-day Kansas, Oklahoma, and northern Texas.
