Did You Know?

Larry Merrill’s digital photograph is not the only contemporary interpretation of this ancient masterwork in the museum’s collection.

Description

Merrill’s ongoing series of photographs, Wards of Time, comprises transformative, intimate views of Greek and Roman antiquities in museums around the United States. His close-up, two-dimensional representations focus our attention in ways not experienced in the galleries, allowing us to discover new and unexpected aspects of these ancient sculptures. Similarly, Cleveland artist Michael Loderstedt turned to screenprinting, another modern technique, to record his own interpretation of the sculpture (see 2019.247).
