Moonlight Over Albuquerque

1976
Location: Not on view

Did You Know?

The title refers to Ansel Adams’s famous photograph of New Mexico, Moonrise over Hernandez.

Description

In Adams’s image, the moon rises over a remote, tiny town while a few rays of remaining sunlight illuminate the crosses in the cemetery. Noggle’s contemplation of mortality shows her partner, Marjorie Shellenberger, in the unflatteringly harsh light of the camera’s flash. Instead of a bucolic desert landscape this scene—probably shot in the artist’s backyard—presents an urban or suburban environment bisected by telephone or electric wires.
