Refracting telescopes were invented in 1608 and are still used today.

Description

Photography has played an important role in scientific research since the medium’s invention in 1839. It is likely that these photographs were made by the Great Lick Telescope in Mont Hamilton, California, completed in 1888. It was the first telescope with a 36-inch refractor, which made it the largest refracting telescope in the world for many years; now it is the second largest.
