Did You Know?

In the early 1900s, a number of women ran their own photography studios.

Description

Mary Bisbee learned photography during the seven years that she worked as a retoucher and bookkeeper in a photo studio run by a man. In 1899, she and another young woman opened their own portrait studio, declaring to a reporter “we shall never ask or wish for patronage on account of being ladies; we shall compete with men on equal terms.” In 1900, Bisbee opened a solo studio, identifying her images as by “Miss Bisbee.” When she married in 1904, she closed it and seems to have given up photography.
