A black-inked screenprint features a high-contrast, grainy portrait of a boy with a light skin tone. Facing forward, he wears a checkered shirt and dark suspenders. A dense block of Spanish text in a black, sans-serif font tightly surrounds his head and shoulders, beginning with "Un día este chico crecerá." The text fills the composition, framing the boy's silhouette and creating a stark, graphic effect against the light paper.

Did You Know?

Created shortly after David Wojnarowicz was diagnosed as HIV positive, this print was meant to not only communicate but also universalize his outrage—one that he felt was shared by anyone who had been similarly oppressed due to their identity.

Description

This print belongs to a series by David Wojnarowicz featuring his childhood portrait alongside text describing the prejudice, trauma, and abuse that he would encounter as an adult due to his queer identity. A central member of the East Village art scene in New York City during the 1980s, Wojnarowicz used ephemeral media such as printmaking to reach as broad an audience as possible, using his practice as a form of activism. He intended to create versions of this print in major world languages but passed away from AIDS-related complications after finishing only the English and German versions. The remaining prints—including this example—were completed in 2018 to realize the artist’s vision for his work.
