Did You Know?
Although this work was printed using a woodblock, Mel Kendrick describes it as a “drawing.”Description
This print belongs to Mel Kendrick’s series of “woodblock drawings,” which feature assemblages of geometric forms. Best known as a sculptor, around 1990 Kendrick began to experiment with printing plywood blocks on paper, allowing the texture of the material’s grain to serve as a compositional element. Their improvisational shapes recall his three-dimensional wood carvings, translating these works to an entirely different medium.- 1990–?Marjorie Talalay [1921–2008], Cleveland, OH?–2023William Busta and Joan Tomkins, Cleveland Heights, OH, given to The Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OHSeptember 11, 2023–The Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH
