Did You Know?

In the late 1950s, votes from the Black community were sought at this campaign event by Michael DiSalle, a Democrat running for governor of Ohio.

Description

Michael DiSalle, the son of Italian immigrants, was the Democratic nominee for governor of Ohio in 1956 but lost. In 1958, he ran again and won, serving from 1959 to 1963. He shakes the hand of an as-yet unidentified Black man in this posed photo, probably destined for the man’s wall or for publication in a local newspaper.
