A horizontally oriented black-and-white photograph depicts three people with light skin tones against leaf-patterned curtains. Centered, a woman wearing a crown and floral-patterned dress smiles at us while holding a tall, winged trophy. To our left, a man in a dark suit rests his hands on the trophy base, looking toward her. On the right, a man in glasses and a textured suit stands looking toward her, both men smiling.

Did You Know?

Jimmy Baynes chronicled the local music scene and community events in Cleveland from the 1950s through the 1980s.

Description

Baynes’s subject matter ranged from nightclub performances, beauty contests, and fashion and burlesque shows to political and promotional events. His images were used by clubs, performers, and merchants as publicity shots; many were published in local magazines and newspapers including the Call and Post. Here he shows us the culmination of beauty contest, handing the trophy to the winner.
