A horizontally oriented black-and-white photograph depicts six men with dark skin tones in suits posing on a wooden stage. From our left, a man holds a trumpet. Beside him, two men stand together, one in a checkered suit holding a trombone. Centrally, a man wearing glasses holds a saxophone. Behind them, a drummer sits at a kit labeled 'Joe Cooper.' Did You Know?

Cleveland’s vibrant mid-century music scene hosted many national artists but had its own stars, too.

Description

Cleveland musicians Joe Cooper and Archie Taylor performed with many of the biggest stars of the mid-1900s. Joe Cooper, pictured with the bass, also played piano and all the woodwind instruments. In addition to having his own trio that performed in Ohio, he was part of Duke Ellington’s orchestra. Archie Taylor, seen on the drums, accompanied Lou Rawls, Nancy Wilson, and Billie Holiday.
