A horizontally oriented black-and-white photograph depicts a person with light skin tone and short hair from the chest up, seated inside a car. Their face occupies the right half of the frame, eyes directed toward our left and lips set in a straight line. They wear a dark turtleneck, thin necklace, and jacket. A blurred hand grips a dark object. A rearview mirror, visor, and bright landscape are visible behind.

Did You Know?

Anne Noggle’s photographs focus on the dignity and beauty of, and indignities suffered by, aging women.

Description

Noggle chose to fight the aging process—what she referred to as “the saga of the fallen flesh”—through plastic surgery. She photographed the immediate aftermath of the procedure in Face Lift No. 3, 1975 (2023.51). In this photograph, taken earlier in the year she got the face lift, Noggle purposely caught herself in an unflattering and disturbing moment.
