The number of playgrounds in New York City grew from 119 in 1934 to 777 in 1960.

Description

In her Playground Series, SophieRivera posed children with the playground equipment with which they were engaged. All these portraits employ double exposure—combining two images into one frame by photographing subjects on the same frame of film. “In using this technique, Rivera sought to capture a child’s constant adoption and shedding of external personalities as the child determines selfhood,” wrote Jeannot Barr, who represents the artist’s estate.
