A horizontally oriented acrylic and graphite drawing on tan paper depicts a central horizontal form with symmetrical geometric patterns. Bold blue lines outline mirrored sections filled with solid green triangles, red rectangles, and diamonds with yellow lines. A vertical center band holds a green diamond with two black dots. Handwritten text at the bottom edge reads "#62," "BLUE CHIN," and a signature. The balanced composition leaves wide swathes of the page blank.

Description

For her Bishkisché series, Red Star studies and then paints 226 rawhide cases, containers used to transport meat or grain, each isolated against colorful backgrounds. Traditionally fabricated and decorated by the women in her (Apsáalooke / Crow) tribe, they bear unique designs. Each one in the series is named after an Apsáalooke woman that the artist has collected from archival research, resuscitating her name from marginalized histories. This series is emblematic of Red Star’s ongoing research-based practice and conceptual project of honoring the rich legacy of both Apsáalooke women who contributed to her tribe’s aesthetic tradition.
