A black-and-white photograph depicts seven men with medium skin tones standing in a horizontal line against a large, draped tarp. Wearing jackets and jeans, they clutch bundles of small flowers. Six men, excluding the one on our right, also hold light-colored wide-brimmed hats. Behind them, a dark, peaked roof sits atop the tarp, while utility poles and buildings are scattered across the rising hills in the background.

Description

As traditional, legal crops have precipitously dropped in value, growing poppies for the drug trade has enabled many farms to survive. Violence often results during struggles between the farmers, the army, drug cartels, and armed rebel groups. These tensions and the tragedies that result from them are reflected in Rodríguez’s images, including his picture of a solemn procession of men shown in Funeral.
