This portrait shows three of the thirteen wives of the ruler of Nepal.

Description

Jung Bahadur Rana (1817-1877), prime minister and ruler of Nepal from 1846-1877, made the governmental systems of England and France the models for his modernization of his country’s governance. His admiration for Europe led to the women of his court incorporating aspects of European fashion into their dress, such as the voluminous skirts and shawls seen here.
