Did You Know?

Laurie Simmons’s staged, constructed images address societal issues including the objectification of women and the evils of consumerism.

Description

This set of five black-and-white and five color images survey a quarter-century of Simmons’s photography. Her use of pop culture, everyday objects, and humor to question identity and gender roles is playful yet potent. This portfolio was created on the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the New Museum in New York, which was founded in 1977 to show art that was truly contemporary—made within the last ten years.
