A vertically oriented, house-shaped lithograph and chine collé print features a gabled peak with a yellow Star of David, menorah, and black pouch over pink and yellow splatters. Framed in neon pink and blue, geometric panels reveal historical scenes. In the large central pane, an older woman holds geometric sketches. Surrounding panels display black-and-white portraits of Anne Frank, the Western Wall, and Hebrew text. At the bottom, colorful harlequins and a figure appear.

Did You Know?

Miriam Schapiro created this print at the Brodsky Center, a printmaking workshop established to support the work of artists who are contributing new narratives to American art.

Description

Pioneering feminist artist Miriam Schapiro became known for her use of recognizable found imagery and of shaped canvases and other supports, both aspects of her work that are highlighted in this print. In squares filling the structure of a house, Schapiro inserted collaged elements relating to her own history as a Jewish woman, including the yellow badge that Jewish people were required to wear in Nazi-occupied Europe, a portrait of Anne Frank, and a photograph of the early 20th-century Jewish artist Sonia Delaunay.
