A hanging scroll on cream paper displays a vertical assembly of symbolic flora and food. Tall branches with yellow blossoms reach toward black calligraphy. Below, soft pink peonies bloom beside a pine branch and a large white cabbage bound with twine. At the base, white narcissus blooms sit near a cluster of bright red persimmons and white garlic bulbs with stringy roots. Muted ink washes and expressive lines create a delicate, varied composition.

New Year Provisions

1948

Description

Jiang Hanting was a respected bird and flower painter and part of Wu Hufan’s circle of friends in Shanghai. Here he combines peonies, wax plum, and pine with cabbage, garlic, kaki (persimmon), and lingzhi fungus, all seasonal and symbolic plants and fruits associated with good wishes for the Lunar New Year celebration. The light pastel tones in green, orange, and pink complement each other and give the painting a fresh and festive appearance.
