Did You Know?
Miguel Ferrando’s career was tragically cut short at the age of 38, due to AIDS-related complications.Description
Artist Miguel Ferrando was born in the Dominican Republic and, although he moved to New York as a child, its culture remained his major subject. This drawing belongs to a series containing anachronistic art historical references alongside well-known buildings that serve as landmarks in the Dominican Republic. Here, he depicted the Monumento a los Héroes de la Restauración, a monument commissioned by dictator Rafael Trujillo in 1944 to commemorate the centenary of the Dominican War of Independence. The structure appears in the distance while the foreground is filled by historically attired figures—some reference paintings such as Goya’s Black Duchess of 1797, who was famously depicted in the attire of the lower classes despite her social standing.- {{cite web|title=Untitled (Colonialism Monument: Monumento a los Héros de la Restauración, Santiago, D.R.)|url=false|author=Miguel Ferrando|year=1981–82|access-date=08 July 2026|publisher=Cleveland Museum of Art}}
