Did You Know?

Jack Whitten began to focus on sculpture during a summer spent on the island of Crete, where he eventually established a second residence.

Description

Jack Whitten was among the most influential Black artists to work with abstraction during the 20th century. After moving to New York City from rural Alabama during the 1960s, he embarked on a career that lasted over five decades. This work is the artist’s only print, created by inking and printing the top of his carved wood sculpture, Sphinx. The artist created the work during a summer spent exploring sculpture using unusual, repurposed materials like bone, marble, paper, glass, metal, and wood.
