Scanners can be used to “photograph” three-dimensional objects.

Description

Ann Hamilton used a handheld (wand) scanner to create these images of a small sculpture of a male figure from a crèche in the museum’s collection (1972.368.16). Hamilton rolled the scanner across a sheet of translucent plastic that could bend around the object, moving hand and object to manipulate where light touched the figure and thus, what would be visible in the image. The miniature object, rendered gigantic, was printed on paper and glued onto canvas. The distorted, fragmented images transform and animate the sculpture.
