Did You Know?

Mario Algaze came to Miami after being exiled from Cuba at age 13.

Description

In the 1970s, Algaze became a freelance photojournalist and worked throughout Latin America, creating images that evoke everyday life there. This street scene from Guatemala City shows a woman carrying a child and a group of wooden wagons, both set against a decrepit building. This street scene reveals Algaze’s poetic use of light and form, which here transmute a crumbling street into a classical, harmonious, and balanced composition.
