McCloud developed the experimental technique used in this work while living in India, where he observed the sheer volume of single-use plastic bags that were discarded as waste. The artist gathered, washed, and applied heat to the plastic bags to turn them into artwork. “I wanted to revisit the idea of beauty, and that anything in the right time and right context could become beautiful,” he says. Labor is central to Pushing Through, from the intensive production of the piece itself, to the imagery of the scene: a street vendor seen from behind transporting bunches of bananas on a bicycle.
