Set of Human Ear Effigies

Set of Human Ear Effigies

900–500 BC

Description

The function of these nearly life-size ear effigies is mysterious, although a set of four holes drilled on each of the inner edges suggest they were seated on something. (Three holes are shallow while one channels through each ear horizontally and could have been used for lashing.) The pierced lobes may have held ear ornaments.
