Undergraduate Internships
 
CMA Student Guide Program

The CMA Undergraduate Student Guide Program is an experiential training internship that enables college students to engage museum audiences by designing tours, guiding close looking, presenting in educational videos and virtual programs, and researching and writing art history. The student guides work to demonstrate how works of art are relevant to our current moment and explore how art reveals what we think, how we see, and how we live.

No experience with art or museums? Not to worry! From agriculture to zoology, the CMA welcomes students of all majors to learn how to understand the world and themselves through art and to help others do the same. As a CMA student guide, you have the opportunity to explore the CMA’s permanent collection, deepen your knowledge of art history, and gain public-speaking and writing skills. Additionally, student guides contribute to numerous educational projects across museum departments, so every year offers guides new challenges and exciting ways to share their skills and interests with CMA audiences. 

This position requires a two-year commitment and a time commitment of approximately four hours per week during the academic year.

*Note: We will not recruit new student guides during the 2022-23 academic year! Please check back in Spring of 2023 to apply to the Student Guide Program.

To apply, you must be the following:

•     A first-, second-, or third-year undergraduate of any major, enrolled full time
•     Eligible to work in the US

And you must be at least one of the following:

•     From an underrepresented minority group
•     A first-generation college student
•     Receiving significant financial aid

General (academic year, summer)

The CMA offers a variety of internships during the summer, fall, and spring semesters. Undergraduate internships are offered in the following departments: curatorial, public and academic engagement, conservation, human resources, philanthropy, collections management, and visitor services. Warshawsky + Summer on the Cuyahoga (SOTC) Fellowships (academic year, summer)

The CMA is pleased to introduce the combined Warshawsky Fellowship and the SOTC experience. This means that fellowship recipients receive a US$3,000 stipend, free dormitory housing, and unique immersion into the community, with the ultimate goal of having fellows build networks permanently located in Cleveland and northeast Ohio.  

Summer 2022 fellowship positions are available in the Curatorial and Collections Management Departments. Recipients receive a $3,000 stipend for a 280-hour internship.

To be eligible, students must meet these requirements:

•     Attend one of the following schools: Allegheny, Case Western Reserve University, Colgate University, Cornell University, Denison University, Oberlin University, Ohio Wesleyan University, Smith College, or the University of Chicago
•     Major in art history, curatorial studies, or library/archival studies
•     Be currently enrolled or no more than one year beyond graduation

Arts Intern (summer only)

The CMA has partnered with the Studio Institute’s Arts Intern program to offer paid summer internships for undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need.  

To qualify for the Arts Intern program, you must meet these requirements:

• Be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student as of the fall 2021 semester; you must be a rising junior or senior
• Attend college in Cleveland, or live within Cleveland or the boundary established by the inner ring suburbs  
• Have an expected family contribution of less than $5,000 (listed on your FAFSA)  

These positions pay $15 per hour, 35 hours a week for 9 weeks. In addition, you receive a $500 stipend for completing the Arts Intern component of the program. Visit the Studio Institute’s website [3] for more information and to apply.
