Childe Hassam selected a high viewpoint for this depiction of modern, urban life. The distance gained allowed him to depict the people in the street not as individuals, but as masses of blurred, moving color. Quick, broken brushstrokes add energy and vitality to the scene. "Humanity in motion is a continual study for me," Hassam wrote.
