Did You Know?

Careful analysis of this painting reveals that Picasso used three different sized brushes: a wide one for the background and dress, a narrower one for the hat, and a smaller pointed one for the face.

Description

Pablo Picasso created this portrait of an artist’s model named Jeanne in the spring of 1901 when he was 20 years old, in preparation for his first exhibition in Paris held at the Galerie Vollard where he displayed more than 65 paintings and drawings. The bold brushwork and lively palette in works such as Woman with a Cape were noted by a contemporary critic who described Picasso’s style as “lively, precocious.”
A vertically oriented oil painting with thick, sweeping brushstrokes depicts a woman with light skin tone wearing a brimmed, red hat and a green-grey cape, roughly outlined in dark blue. Her shoulders face right while she looks at us. A yellow-gold buckle fastens a curling, black feather to her hat, whose red accentuates her red cheeks. Smaller brushstrokes paint her face, while the cape's sweeping strokes are smoother than the white-blue background's.
