Garry Winogrand was renowned for his street photography—taking spontaneous images in public places.

Description

Winogrand always shot rapidly, profusely, and from a variety of seemingly capricious angles. When shooting with his preferred 28 mm lens, he had to be close to his subjects and in front of them to avoid distortion. In 1973, he began teaching photography at the University of Texas, Austin. For this image of a home game of the school’s team, the Texas Leghorns, he was down on the sidelines, as close to the action as possible. The following year, he broke his knee and leg photographing a game.
