Description

James Van Der Zee photographed the activities of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and caught its founder, Marcus Garvey, in a more casual grouping with a colleague and Prince Kojo Tovalu-Houénou of the Royal Family of Dahomey (located in present-day Benin) during the organization’s 1924 convention. Since the background was distracting, Van Der Zee lightened and blurred it.
Black-and-white photograph of three standing men with medium skin tones wearing suits, each labeled in white, all-capital letters across the bottom of the photograph: on the left, "MR. MARKS," center "PRINCE TAVOLO," right, "MARCUS GARVY." They all look at us, the central Prince Tavolo wearing a white suite and fedora hat, while Mark's suit appears a darker grey, Garvy's a lighter, both holding their fedoras. The background has been washed out to a hazy white.
