Description

Tse works in a variety of media including video, sculpture, and photography. Her background as a classical cellist and her upbringing in both Western and Eastern cultures are at the foundation of her work. Here, music becomes both a subject matter and a medium. Mistelpartition is structured as a sequence of images and sound that repeats in an infinite loop so that the viewer’s experience may transcend the immediate action recorded on video. Gift of the Contemporary Art Society of the Cleveland Museum of Art in memory of Rosalie Cohen 2009.10
A horizontally oriented sepia-toned photograph with a soft, grainy texture depicts a row of tall, thin, leafless trees against a muted sky. Numerous dark, rounded clusters of mistletoe are scattered throughout the upper branches. Near the center, a bright white orb glows from behind the vertical trunks. To the right, a dark evergreen stands among the bare trees. Dense, shadowy shrubbery lines the bottom, highlighting repetitive vertical lines and a warm palette.
