Description

Ilse Bing delighted in walking through and photographing in Central Park. Its zoo, which was modernized in 1934, was a source of civic pride and enjoyment. Rose, its much-beloved hippopotamus, was brought there in 1930. In this portrait, she is 12 years old.
A horizontally-oriented black-and-white photograph depicts the hippopotamus Rose laying down at the corner of an enclosure. Evenly spaced, cylindrical bars extend up from the ground, Rose's nose pressed up against the corner bar and her round, leathery body extending at an angle behind. She leans on her side, away from us, her front two legs visible before her body extends beyond the photo.
