CLEVELAND (November 29, 2022) — Celebrate the holidays at three new events and two special exhibitions at the Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) that can’t be missed.

Get up, get down and dance around at the hottest Holiday FUNKtion of the season. The Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) will host MIX: Holiday FUNKtion on Friday, December 2 from 6 to 10 p.m. An exciting, upbeat night of art, music and dance, this ticketed event features two rock steady sets of funk by Cleveland’s own Shoreline Funk All Stars, who recently won Best New Band at this year’s Cleveland Music Awards. MIX is a 21+ event.

Winter Lights Lantern Festival / Holiday CircleFest and CMA! Play Day
Sunday, December 4, 12–4 p.m.

The museum joins CMA! Play Day and University Circle’s Holiday CircleFest, an annual free community open house presented by University Circle Inc., on Sunday, December 4, from 12 to 4 p.m. The CMA offers a special tour of Impressionism to Modernism: The Keithley Collection during CircleFest: all  tickets for the exhibition will be $5 that day (adult, child 6–17, senior, student). See the most significant gift of art to the CMA in more than 60 years before it closes on January 8.

Families can also enjoy Play Day during CircleFest, Sunday, December 4. Make a free paper lantern in the Ames Family Atrium from 12 to 4 p.m. No registration necessary. Free timed tickets are available at the welcome table located near the entrance to the atrium. Also in the Ames Family Atrium is CMA! Play Day: Illuminate with free activities for the whole family from 12 to 4 p.m. Let your creative light shine while enjoying the sights and activities of the CMA’s Winter Lights Lantern Festival and University Circle Inc.’s Holiday CircleFest. Make your own light-reflecting holiday ornaments, create shadow puppets that tell a story, and play games!

Paper lantern–making activities at the Community Arts Center are also available during Open Studios on Saturdays and Sundays, 1–4 p.m.

Trio Mediæval Wolcome Yole at the CMA
Wednesday, December 7, 7:30–9 p.m.

On December 7, Grammy-nominated Trio Mediæval will perform its program entitled Wolcome Yole, featuring traditional Scandinavian Christmas songs and hymns, medieval English carols, and contemporary works written for the group.

Trio Mediæval members Anna Maria Friman, Linn Andrea Fuglseth and Jorunn Lovise Husan have captivated audiences since the group was founded in Oslo, Norway, in 1997. The trio juxtaposes sacred polyphony with folk music and improvisation, melding these elements into a style that is uniquely its own. Trio Mediæval’s fruitful relationship with the legendary ECM Records, collaborative spirit, and busy touring schedule have earned worldwide renown, and the group frequently appears on the most prestigious stages in the world, including London’s Wigmore Hall, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Vienna Konzerthaus, New York’s Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

Impressionism to Modernism: The Keithley Collection

In March 2020, Clevelanders Joseph P. and Nancy F. Keithley made a gift and promised gift of their private collection of more than 100 works of art to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the largest gift of art to the museum since the bequest of Leonard C. Hanna Jr. in 1958. For the first time and only time, the collection will be on view in its entirety in the CMA’s exhibition Impressionism to Modernism: The Keithley Collection through January 8, 2023, in the Kelvin and Eleanor Smith Foundation Exhibition Hall.

Throughout two decades of collecting, the Keithleys selected works of art to complement and enrich the CMA’s collection. At times, the Keithleys built upon a strength in the museum’s collection; on other occasions, they acquired a work of art that would bring something entirely new to the collection. Certain works of art in the Keithleys’ gift and promised gift are shown alongside paintings, drawings or objects from the CMA’s collection, inviting visitors to discover connections, contrasts and poetic conversations between familiar, favorite works of art and new objects from the Keithleys.

The Keithleys’ collection focuses on Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and modern European and American paintings. Among the highlights in Impressionism to Modernism: The Keithley Collection are five paintings by Pierre Bonnard; four each by Maurice Denis and Édouard Vuillard; two each by Milton Avery, Georges Braque, Gustave Caillebotte, Joan Mitchell and Félix Vallotton and individual pictures of outstanding quality by Henri-Edmond Cross, Vilhelm Hammershøi, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Camille Pissarro and Andrew Wyeth.

Among the works on paper are six watercolors by John Marin, five drawings by Bonnard and a spectacular pastel by Eugène Boudin. Also included in the exhibition is a selection of European and American decorative arts as well as Chinese and contemporary Japanese ceramics. In the exhibition, Asian ceramics are shown alongside Western paintings and drawings to echo the harmonies created by the Keithleys, who enjoyed thoughtfully juxtaposing the works in their home.

Tales of the City: Drawing in the Netherlands from Bosch to Bruegel

With subjects ranging from hell scenes to popular proverbs, the range of engaging themes showcased in Tales of the City: Drawing in the Netherlands from Bosch to Bruegel will entrance and surprise visitors. This once-in-a-lifetime exhibition introduces audiences to the immense diversity of works made during the rapid urbanization and mercantile expansion of the Northern Renaissance, exploring issues that remain relevant today, such as religious conflict and freedom and the ethics and excesses of wealth. The exhibition features a variety of imaginative sketches, preparatory works and finished drawings, made with precise pen and ink, vibrant watercolor and layered chalk techniques.

On view in the Kelvin and Eleanor Smith Foundation Exhibition Gallery through January 8, 2023, Tales of the City: Drawing in the Netherlands from Bosch to Bruegel contains rarely seen drawings from the Albertina Museum in Vienna, one of Europe’s oldest and finest collections. The selection of 101 drawings is combined with choice examples from the Cleveland Museum of Art’s holdings.

Docent tours are offered on Tuesdays and Sundays at 1:15 p.m.

Whether used for visual communication or creative expression, photographic images created in printer’s ink have increasingly saturated our daily lives since the invention of photography. Photographs in Ink, the newest exhibition at the Cleveland Museum of Art, explores the proliferation of printed photographic images and how artists have responded to this phenomenon. Organized by guest curator Benjamin Levy, Photographs in Ink is on view through April 2, 2023, in the Mark Schwartz and Bettina Katz Photography Gallery.

Told through historical and contemporary works of art, Photographs in Ink presents two intertwined narratives: the use of photomechanical processes—the umbrella term for techniques that are part printmaking and part photography—to widely disseminate images and their adoption by fine artists as content and aesthetic choice. Since the invention of photography, the majority of published photographs have been printed through photomechanical processes rather than produced in the darkroom or digitally.

The works on view range from the 1850s through the early 2000s, including selected works by Eadweard Muybridge, Alfred Stieglitz, Andy Warhol, Sigmar Polke, Carl Pope Jr. and Lorna Simpson.

Modern Impressions—Light and Water in Chinese Prints

Printing was invented around 700 in China, the country with the longest continuous print history in the world. Color printing by pressing separately cut woodblocks for each color (the douban technique) on paper was likewise first developed in China.

Over the last five years, the Cleveland Museum of Art has acquired works by contemporary Chinese printmakers that are on display here for the first time. By bringing diversity in geography and gender to the museum’s prints and drawings collection, these artists demonstrate the exploration of the print medium in new ways and varied formats. This presentation focuses on the visual and atmospheric effects of light and water.

China through the Magnifying Glass: Masterpieces in Miniature and Detail

Objects in miniature have mesmerized people of all cultures throughout the ages. The CMA’s Chinese collection has an extraordinarily large number of high-quality small-scale objects and miniatures from various dynasties. This exhibition focuses on China and explores the role and function of miniatures and small-scale masterpieces of craftsmanship. About 80 objects dating from ancient times to the 1800s will be presented according to their respective use and function in themed sections: “Accessories and Ornaments,” “Ritual and Devotion,” “Luxury and Craftsmanship,” “The Scholar’s Desk,” and “Toys, Boys, and Games.” These themes question each object’s function and role in society as a way of achieving a better understanding of China’s culture and history, as well as miniatures worldwide.

The CDC updated its guidelines regarding the need to wear face coverings in public settings for protection against COVID-19. Visitors may choose to wear a mask at any time. Masks may be required by local or state authorities based on the COVID-19 community levels in Cuyahoga County.

The CMA’s current hours of operation are Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Wednesday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The museum is closed Mondays. Updated hours will be announced as decided. Visit cma.org to stay up to date on this information.
