Celebrate Valentine’s Day at the Cleveland Museum of Art with CMA Love Story

Cleveland (January 28, 2020) — The Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) will host a day of programs celebrating love in all its forms, Friday, February 14. Stroll through the galleries with your loved one and see the FREE special exhibition PROOF: Photography in the Era of the Contact Sheet. Enjoy the glow of 20 illuminated stained glass lamps and other Art Nouveau creations on view in Tiffany in Bloom: Stained Glass Lamps of Louis Comfort Tiffany. Other highlights include love-inspired guided tours, self-guided tours via the ArtLens App and featured artwork on the ArtLens Wall and the Reveal and Zoom Wall in ARTLENS Gallery. Provenance will also offer a specialty cocktail and a prix fixe menu inspired by Tiffany in Bloom.

The Cleveland Museum of Art is open Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Wednesdays and Fridays, 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The museum is closed Mondays.

PROOF: Photography in the Era of the Contact Sheet

Contact sheets were vital to the practice of photography, until digital technology made them obsolete. The photographer first saw positive images on the contact sheet, chose which frames to enlarge and kept the sheet as a record. PROOF: Photography in the Era of the Contact Sheet features approximately 180 works from the collection of Clevelanders Mark Schwartz and Bettina Katz that highlight the aims and methods of a broad range of photographers at work during the second half of the 20th century. The free exhibition features works by Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Harry Benson, Harry Callahan, Robert Frank, Philippe Halsman, Irving Penn and Albert Watson as well as by Schwartz’s friends Arnold Newman, Larry Fink and Emmet Gowin. Rare photographs of iconic celebrities, including Marilyn Monroe, the Beatles and Groucho Marx, are on view.

Tiffany in Bloom: Stained Glass Lamps of Louis Comfort Tiffany explores Tiffany’s vivid designs in relation to emerging artistic and craft movements at the turn of the 20th century. This dynamic, illuminated display of the designer’s finest stained glass table and floor lamps also features the iconic stained glass window made in about 1900 for the Howell Hinds House in Cleveland Heights. Period photographs and accounts of his artisans also provide a glimpse into Tiffany’s shop and studio. Most of the works on view in Tiffany in Bloom joined the museum’s collection through the generous bequest of Cleveland entrepreneur Charles Maurer. This collection is on view for the first time in its entirety at the museum.

Signal Noise: Aaron Rothman

This exhibition surveys 10 years of Aaron Rothman’s studies of the landscape of the American West. Through analog and digital photography and digital processing and printing, he transmutes unpretentious fragments of nature into sensuous, sublimely beautiful images that hover between two- and three-dimensional space and vacillate between representation and abstraction.
