Description

Lepère developed an extraordinary mastery of wood engraving with which he achieved rich tonal contrasts. Felix Bracquemond, an important 19th-century etcher, called Lepère the artist who "sees as a painter and renders as a printmaker."
A vertically oriented wood engraving depicts the facade of Rouen Cathedral. A central arched portal is flanked by two towers: the left with a pointed roof and the taller right one with intricate stonework. Behind, a slender spire rises against a large circular form in the sky. Small figures populate the plaza in the foreground. Inscribed at the bottom right is "ROUEN" above "A. LEPERE."
