Description

The print includes a portrayal of the otsu-e maiden behind the dancer to emphasize the subject’s origins in festival dances (see also Wisteria Maiden [1963.96]). The print is a surimono, an elaborately printed image designed for private distribution among friends or members of a poetry club.
A square color woodblock print features a woman leaning rightward, draped in a layered blue and tan patterned kimono beneath a wide, flat white hat. To our left, vertical columns of black calligraphy punctuate the background. Behind her, a spindly plum tree with small blossoms branches upward. Upper right, a rectangular inset depicts the smaller Wisteria Maiden carrying flowering branches. Both figures have light skin tones.
